ANK 142 1911, 5 H, green, on postcard showing a view of Constantinople, posted on board Austrian Lloyd steamer HABSBURG, tied with violet scarce ds HABSBURG OE LLOYD, a Suez receiving mark dated 11 7th December, then being carried on the Cairo Alexandria TPQ date stamped at 1900 on the same day, the card probably then travelled to Brindisi from where it would proceed by rail to Britain, the card bears the overseas Austrian rate of 10 Heller for a postcard. The Habsburg, built in 1895 was 4014 tons displacement, normally employed on the Trieste-Alexandria express service, the call at Suez indicates the ship was being used as a substitute on one of the Far East or African services. As the card refers to having that day passed through the canal, the ship must have been on the outward bound leg of her voyage, the writer, an English gentleman, possibly travelling to the Far East or East Africa on a posting may well have travelled overland to Brindisi and picked up the ship there, this would have the fastest way of travelling to the Far East or East Africa from the U.K, ex Tranmer, additional included is a small piece with a black cancellation of the same Lloyd steamer, XF!
